Facebook post prompts heightened security at REL campus

A Facebook post about a gun on the Robert E. Lee campus led Tyler ISD officials and Tyler Police on an all-day-long investigation.

District officials say they caught wind of the rumor in the morning when school officials heard that there was a Facebook post that threatened someone was going to bring a gun on campus.

Ultimately, the rumors were not substantiated, but the school took precaution by beefing up security and bringing portable metal detectors on campus.

TISD spokesperson Laura Jackson says, "There are more police officers on campus today. They took portable metal detectors on campus to provide that extra line of security and just a heightened awareness of everything that's going on."

Jackson says many parents did pull their children out of class--around 700, after the rumor circulated.
