Man killed while trying to stop rape

POOLER, GA (WTOC) - Nickifor Zephyrine, 28, is dead and one of his co-workers is being charged for his murder.

Friday afternoon, inside the OA Logistics warehouse on Clyde Alexander Way, police say Christopher Lema, 23, fatally shot Zephyrine. According to the police report, the Offender [Lema] was trying to rape a female employee when the Victim [Zephyrine] interceded, causing the Offender to shoot the Victim.

A former employee of OA Logistics, who doesn't want to be identified, said, "According to another source, he [Zephyrine] was trying to get the guy [Lema] off the girl and he [Lema] turned around and punched him [Zephyrine] in the eye and he [Lema] just pulled a guy out and shot him [Zephyrine] in the head."

Police say Lema then stripped naked and ran towards the woods in an attempt to flee.

Pooler Police Chief Mark Revenew said, "They were able to apprehend him and he was identified as the suspect."

This isn't Lema's first encounter with the law. According to the Georgia Department of Corrections website, Lema is currently on parole after being released from prison in June 2010. He served nearly a year behind bars on cocaine and marijuana charges.

"If they would have done a through background check on everybody this would have never happened," said the former employee.

But OA Logistics President Rodney Dickey said they did a background check on Lema. However, Lema gave the employer a false name along with a matching social security number. That identity came back clean.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
