(CNN) - Federal prisoners soon may be able to pass the empty hours by enjoying music on their iPod or MP3 player.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons is testing the idea by allowing them at a women's prison in West Virginia.

If all goes well, it would allow them for many of its 200,000 or so inmates nationwide this year.

The prisoners would choose among a list of about a million approved songs.

Obscene or racially charged songs would not be available.

The MP3's would be sold at prison commissaries.

A bureau spokeswoman says the music could help prisoners deal with idleness, boredom and stress.

An Iowa senator fears the devices will be used as currency and says the program raises a lot of questions.
