Neches Lady Tigers headed to state...again

TYLER, TEXAS (KLTV) - The Neches Lady Tigers are headed back to the state basketball tournament, again.

2nd ranked Neches took down #1 Saltillo 44-39 in the 1A Division II Regional Final at Tyler Junior College.

Neches, located west of Jacksonville and east of Palestine, is now making their 4th consecutive trip to Austin.

The Lady Tigers are also the 2-time defending state champion.

"Never did I think we would be able to go 4 years in a row," said Neches head coach Andy Snider, "And now that we have the chance to win three in a row, it is just amazing."

"Today was a big game for us," said senior Roddricka Patton, "They [Saltillo] were ranked #1 and we were #2, so we really wanted to come out and show everyone who was really #1."

Patton along with four other Neches seniors, have advanced to the state tournament every year they have been in high school.

"We knew this was going to be emotional," said senior Kristen Green, "We know these are the last two games of our career and we want to go out with another title."

The Lady Tigers will play in the 1A Division II State-semi Finals in Austin on Friday at either 2:00 or 7:00, which will be announced later this weekend.

Jackson is back for Lufkin.Jackson is back for Lufkin.

Like Longview, Lufkin is always talented. Before the Panthers begin District 12-6A action, they'll play a loaded East Texas schedule featuring the Lobos in week 1, followed by Nacogdoches and John Tyler. Normally a 7 and 4 campaign would be considered a success, but not in Panther nation. In fact, despite making the playoffs every year, Lufkin hasn't advanced past the first round since 2012.

Our Red Zone Rundown continues with the other two Class 6A programs in East Texas. In District 11-6A with John Tyler and Tyler Lee, who we featured Monday night, Longview figures to challenge for the league title in 2017. In fact, the Lobos and Lions shared the district championship a year ago. It's no secret, Longview is used to winning and it does so by running the football and playing sound defense.
