East Texas prison fighting drug, alcohol addiction

One East Texas Prison is doing more for inmates then just letting them serve their time.

The East Texas Treatment Facility and Prison in Henderson is the largest Drug and Alcohol Addiction treatment facility for multiple offenders in the state of Texas.

Serving more than 6,000 inmates a year with addiction treatment, offenders come from all over the state to battle their addiction in Henderson.

Assistant Warden at the East Texas Treatment Facility, Jennifer Love, said that for many  inmates, coming for treatment here is the last step before having to spend major time in a state facility.

"I truly believe that our offenders see this as their last option," Love said.  "Rather than going to prison, they can utilize the facility and the education we offer here."

One of the inmates trying to utilize the facility is Danny Rogers, a third time DWI offender.
He's been struggling with alcoholism since he was 15 years old and after being in and out of trouble because of his extreme drinking, Rogers reached his limit.

"I almost died of an overdose and seeing my family and kids go through that, I just couldn't go through it anymore," Rogers said.

After receiving treatment here at the facility for almost a year, Rogers is set to be released next week.

"I feel like a totally different person, like this is who I was supposed to be before I was an addict," Rogers said.

Rogers is excited to go back home and ready to see his family.
"I can't wait to hug my kids, and eat a cheese burger," Rogers said.

If you or a loved one has is struggling with alcohol or drug addiction, you can visit one of these eight local treatment facilities in East Texas.
