American Made Cars Move Up In Rankings

For the first time in a quarter century, North American car companies can say they make better cars than their European counterparts.

A new survey in Consumer Reports Magazine, which hit newsstands Tuesday, shows American made cars rank higher in overall reliability than those made in Europe. Cars made in Asia still hold the top spot.

675,000 American car owners were surveyed for the results.

American cars had 18 problems per 100 vehicles. European-made cars had 20 problems reported per 100 vehicles. Asian made cars continued their reign with only 12 problems reported per 100 vehicles. The industry average was 17.

Last year the U.S. and Europe tied in the rankings with 21 problems per 100 vehicles. The numbers were based on the 2003 model year. Consumer reports began ranking cars by nationality in 1979.
