Ballet Tyler performs free concerts this Friday

One local dance company is taking their art to local students.

Ballet Tyler is a nonprofit organization that performs concerts for educational purposes.

And this Friday at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., they'll be performing for several school groups at Caldwell Auditorium in Tyler.

"Ballet is the least taught art in education. And so our desire is to bring it to third graders to introduce it, to see if they like it, and perhaps seek dance opportunities for themselves," said Mary Wright, a Ballet Tyler Board Member.

Ballet Tyler dancers will perform the ballet "Class Classique" during the two school performances this Friday.

"It's kind of a story of what a dancer does. She goes to class, she gets ready, and then she gets to perform," said Artistic Director Patti Patterson.

"It's not going to be like anything else that you would see, say Snow White or the Nutcracker," Wright said.

Ballet Tyler's mission is to provide educational opportunities to local dancers and to perform programs for educational purposes.

"We have found through research a broad spectrum of research that the fine arts actually enhance every other part of education. And it uses the part of the brain that is not used with math or anything else. And so it brings out a creative part," Wright said.

And that's one of the main things Patterson says she hopes people take away from Friday's performances.

"The beauty of classical ballet. Classical ballet seems to be getting lost and I like to bring it back as much as I can," she said.

In addition to Friday's two school performances, there will be a performance Friday night for the public, at 7 p.m. at Caldwell Auditorium.

Admission is free for all three concerts.
