3 injured in fatal I-20 wreck released from hospital

A trip back from Tyler turned into a nightmarish fiery collision Sunday morning on Interstate 20.

Authorities say around 3:20 Sunday morning, two trucks collided in the eastbound lanes of I-20, near the Highway 42 overpass in Gregg County.

"They were driving way to fast on a wet road. That's what caused the accident," says Gregg county DPS Trooper Carl Davis.

Troopers say one truck hydroplaned and hit the other truck, knocking it into a retaining wall.

"Both of them spun out of control off the roadway behind me, struck one of the trees the Dooley hit the tree," Davis says.

As one pickup was on its side, the other slammed into it.

"And before it came to rest, the half-ton hit it underneath, which ruptured the fuel tank," Davis says.

The trucks exploded into a fireball, and the victims in both trucks were still alive at the time, as rescue crews frantically worked to get the victims out. The driver of one truck, 22 year old Victor Hugo Castro of Longview, and a passenger 18 year old Yalitza Diaz of Longview were pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people were hospitalized at Good Shepherd Medical Center. All were either friends or family.

"It appears they were all friends and family traveling together," adds Davis.

Another person, identified as Fernando Morroquin, was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas and was treated for a broken back and severe burns.

The other three injured parties have been released from the hospital.
