WEB EXCLUSIVE: State house passes 'Saggy Pants' bill

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama House of Representatives unanimously passed a Montgomery county ordinance called the "Saggy Pants" bill--which would make wearing your pants "way down low" against the law.

The law would only apply to pants worn in public.

"Stop it...you look ridiculous with your pants hanging down," says 19-year old Joel Sager.

That's exactly the message he wants his peers to hear.

"It's just nasty. It's just nasty. And very disrespectful," says Sager.

Joel and his mother Sharon agree, saggy pants aren't pleasing to the eye.

"It infringes on another person's personal right if a student has their pants hanging down and a person is seeing their underwear," says Dr. Sharon Richards.

"It's unethical, it's indecent and we're going to stop that here in Montgomery County," says Representative Alvin Holmes who sponsored the bill.

He's counting on the senate to pass it as well. If it does, he wants to take the ban statewide.

"Nobody wants their grandmother walking out with their wives and children and see a guy walking about showing his underwear and a part of his private body," says Holmes.

Local Montgomery senators Dick Brewbaker and Quinton Ross say they want to study the issue before voting on it.

When it comes to enforcing the law, Montgomery police say they can't comment on pending legislation.

Still, some folks don't believe there shouldn't be any question about whether it should pass.

"I think that we should have it. Because it doesn't make any sense for young men to have their pants sagging," says Vonterius McMillion.

"I think that a law would be something eventually; however, I believe that you should first educate," says Richards.

This bill is very similar to the one passed by the Selma and Greenville city councils.

Greenville's mayor says the ordinance is working. In fact, he says pants are pulled up and people are wearing longer t-shirts there.

The bill calls for a fine up to $100 for juveniles and up to $150 for adults cited for wearing "saggy pants."
