Woman charged with abandoning children at motel

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- An east Texas mother is now charged with child endangerment after her son was found walking alone on the second story balcony of a Longview motel. The child was spotted on the balcony of the Motel 6 on South Access Road in Longview at about one 1am Thursday morning.

Witnesses reported to the front desk clerk that an unattended 2 year old boy was walking alone on the second floor balcony. When police arrived they found that the child had walked out of a room where a second child, a 4 year old boy was sleeping.

"We found a partially open door with another child inside asleep on the bed, someone at the hotel did spot a small child walking across the walkway there at the hotel on the second floor," says Longview Police Officer Kristie Brian.

The mother, 22 year old Ariel Wallace, had vanished , and its not known how long the two children had been left alone.

"Miss Wallace was nowhere to be found once they did find out that she did rent the room," Brian says.

The child had access to a stairwell leading to the parking area, and police say he could have gotten to the busy roadway.

"This could have turned out really bad, it was on the second floor the child could have been injured," Brian adds.

An open room door was an imminent danger police say.

"Someone could have gone in taken the children," says Brian.

When Wallace returned, nearly an hour and a half after police had arrived her excuse was that she had left them in the care of a male friend, but police say there's no evidence that friend was ever there.

"She said that she had left her children with someone, that turned out actually to be false," Brian says.

Wallace offered no clear explanation of where she was, and was arrested on two counts of abandonment-endangerment of a child, and upon a search was also charged with drug possession.

"After she came back they located some xanax in her purse," says Brian.

The children are in the custody of family members. Ariel Wallace is being held in the Gregg County Jail on $11,000 bond.
