Local man to compete for 'Worst Cook in America' title

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas man has the dubious distinction of being one of the worst cooks in America.

David Shelton of Longview is so bad, he was nominated to be on the show, "Worst Cooks in America." Shelton is competing to improve his culinary skills and win a cool $25,000 while doing so.

It's fair to say Longview's David Shelton was not a good cook--just a few short months ago.

"I really don't know how to cook much more than macaroni and cheese and eggs and bacon," says Shelton.

It was Shelton's wife that nominated him to be part of the national TV series on the Food Network, "Worst Cooks in America."

"She knows that cooking is not one of my strong suits and she submitted my information, and sure enough they called me and said, 'Would you like to come down to Houston, we want our casting director to meet you,'" says Shelton.

Sure enough, Shelton was one of 16 contestants that got selected to be on Season Three. They got to learn from the best: Anne Burrell and Bobby Flay.

"I said, 'All right, I get to learn how to cook--which is something I've always wanted to do, and then learn from them?,'" Shelton recalled.

It was an easy choice for Shelton. He wanted to learn to cook.

"You learn the absolute basics on how to boil stuff, and how to cut to spices, and exotic foods, exotic fruits and vegetables, I mean they put you through it," says Shelton.

The competitors compete in making dishes they thought they were good at. Shelton picked dishwasher salmon in the first episode.

"You basically put some spices on a piece of salmon and put it in foil, and stick it in the dishwasher," says Shelton.

But with no dishwasher he had to improvise,"I thought at 400 degrees for 30 minutes would be good, ya, it was basically hard as a rock," says Shelton.

After hours of work and training, let's just say Shelton is now a better cook all in all.

"It's motivating to get these ingredients and these dishes and try new things, so it's kind of making me excited about cooking," exclaims Shelton.

Shelton hopes East Texas supports him during the competition.

You can watch David each week on the Food Network. "Worst Cooks in America" airs every Sunday night at 8 o'clock.
