Van Zandt County Recovers From Strong Storm

People in Van Zandt County saw a great deal of damage from Thursday's storm.

The heart of the damage was on both sides of Interstate 20 near Highway 64, just outside Canton. High winds knocked down trees, ripped roofs off of buildings and overturned many trailer homes at the Canton Camp Ground and RV Park. About a dozen families spent the day picking through debris, looking for their belongings. The Red Cross was there most of the day assisting residents.

Across the highway, Ray Stutts lost his barn, had damage to some farm equipment, and had to put down one of his Quarter Horses. He estimates damages to be over $250,000.

Thousands of people were without power and cable in rural communities in Van Zandt County late Friday afternoon. Both power lines and the satellite dishes that service those customers were downed by the high winds. There is no time frame on when those services will be restored.

As of Friday, the National Weather Service had yet to call the storm a tornado, but they are expected to survey the area over the next few days and come up with a classification.
