Metal thieves swipe bleachers from church and school ball fields

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - The latest bizarre item to be stolen from thieves looking to resell metal are the bleachers at two local ball fields.

Last week the Liberty United Methodist Church reported that the top row from a section of bleachers at the Liberty baseball field had been stolen.

Now, the sheriff's office is investigating the theft of bleachers from the ball field at Morgan Elementary School, directly across the street from the Liberty ball field.

According to the report, the top row was taken from a bleacher section at the ball field behind the school.  Metal work that held together a section of wooden bleachers was also taken.

"It's sad when you have to steal from a church to make a little money," said local store owner Rick Tutweiler.

Rowan County Sheriff's Captain John Sifford says he believes the thieves are taking the items to sell to scrap yards.  In the last few months there has been a statewide rash of thefts of metal items, most notably air conditioning units.
