Soldier returns to new daughter

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- An east Texas soldier serving overseas returns home to meet his new daughter. Less than a week after his child was born army medic Austin Gehr, serving in Afghanistan, returned to Longview today.

"I'm just as excited for all of us because I haven't seen my son he hopped a flight to Toledo to come all the way down here," said Austin's mother Cyndi Luczak.

Daughter Selene was born February 4th. Gehr came in to east Texas regional airport today to the thunderous cheers of the group 'welcome home soldiers'.

"Its a relief that he's finally here , now he gets to see Selene," says girlfriend Stephanie Wright.

Gehr wasted no time with ceremony, and quickly had his arms around Selene.

"I feel like a proud parent getting to hold her for the first time and see her," Austin says.

The reception was a bit of a surprise.

"There's a giant crowd in here and there's a bunch of clapping, but its nice to see the support of everyone," Gehr says.

But the cheers did not overshadow the moment of being with his family.

"I just want to spend my time with my little girl," he adds.

"I'm going to let him change some dirty diapers now and feed her," jokes Stephanie.

But nothing can replace where this soldier is now.

"Helped take my mind off of a lot of things just nice to finally see her," Austin says.

Gehr is home on two weeks leave before returning to his unit in Afghanistan. He says he plans to spend every waking moment with his daughter.
