East Texas girl takes to baking to spread goodwill

In 2010, 18-year-old Carolina Destarac underwent knee surgery. And, the experience changed the way she saw the world.

While she was recovering, Carolina decided to do some research...and she found an organization in Guatemala called "Help Me to Live."

"I adopted a girl named Rosita. And, that girl helped me establish my desire to bake cakes for those children in Guatemala who cannot afford the chemo therapy treatments," Carolina told us.

She says she bakes about five cakes per weekend and sometimes more depending on demand. She did a lot of baking while still in a wheelchair. She calls her effort "Eat 2 Save."

So far, she has raised $40,000 from baking cakes. Money that not only goes to Rosita, but to other children in her situation.

Carolina also met Rosita in person when she went to Guatemala.

"She had a very happy smile. Like, I didn't really know her. But, the way she treated me with so much happiness was overwhelming," said Carolina.
