DPS Investigates Officer-Involved Wreck

The wreck happened this morning on Hwy 31 just inside Malakoff. Right now, details are still sketchy, but here's what we do know: The Malakoff Police Dept. says one of its officers, Floyd Thomas, was responding to another officer's call for backup. Witnesses say Thomas was speeding over a hill, with his lights on, but not his siren. As Thomas was coming over the hill, he hit another car, sending it into a ditch. Thomas' patrol car landed in someone else's front yard. Dept. of Public Safety troopers investigating the accident say they believe there were four people in the other car. One of them, a woman, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Her name has not been released, so no word yet on what her condition is now. The DPS is investigating the accident.

We did talk to one witness, who says Officer Thomas almost hit his car: "I guess he seen me fixing to turn," Tony Gilfillan said. "He got a little nervous about it. He swerved off, lost control, cut back the other way, missed the front of my truck, by inches, and I guess that's when he lost total control of it and hit the other car from behind."

Hospital officials say Thomas has already been released from the hospital. The DPS says at least one person in the other car has also been released. The investigation is still ongoing.
