School Honors Texas Buffalo Soldiers

As part of Black History Month, seventh graders at Boulter Middle School in Tyler got to see for themselves what life was like for the Texas Buffalo Soldiers. The Buffalo Soldiers were African-Americans who fought against the American Indians after the Civil War. Teachers say the presentation helped to bring classroom history lessons to life.

"We've enjoyed them quite a bit," Shelia Kirven, 7th grade history teacher at Boulter, said. "This has been a very educational experience for all of us, including myself. It gives them a real-life experience of what the Buffalo Soldiers went through."

Some of the things students found most interesting were what the soldiers ate and drank, like a brick of Chinese tea.
