TISD Receives $2 Million of Fitness Equipment

Tyler ISD is stepping up its fight against childhood obesity. Fifteen TISD schools have received a total of $2-million worth of fitness equipment. It's part of the National School Fitness Foundation's program called "Leadership In Fitness Training." Today, teachers and principals from across the district were trained on the new exercise machines. They even tried out a new game, called the Smart Ball Wall Boards. It involves hitting the lit areas as fast as you can. Teachers say they hope the new equipment will make exercise fun for the kids.

"They'll finally know that activity, any kind of activity is going to benefit them," Judy Stanley, P.E. teacher at Bell Elementary, said. "And when you can incorporate eye-hand coordination and new equipment, equipment that a lot of the schools have never had, in numbers that we have to service kids, it's going to show 'em."

Students are scheduled to begin using the new equipment next week.
