Eastman Chemical Upgrade Brings New Jobs

Eastman Chemical Company in East Texas will soon begin the largest turnaround in its more than 50-year history. The project means an estimated 450 new jobs for short-term contractors. Both the Tyler and Longview operations will benefit from the $34-million investment. The project includes maintenance to the plant and expansion of the plant's capacity. Eastman officials say the upgrade will make the company more competitive in the world market.

"We're committed to staying in it," Mike Childress, manager of communications and public affairs, said. "And you have to continue to make these kinds of investments in order to operate in that kind of market."

The project is scheduled to begin tomorrow and run through early April.
