LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Lufkin Police have arrested a Diboll man accused of leaving his baggie of cocaine behind while he was being waited on in customer service at Walmart in November.

Jason Michael Abbott, 27, is charged with possession of a controlled substance.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, the investigation began on Nov. 6, when an employee said he found a small clear bag with drugs in it. The employee said that he was working at the customer service desk and found the bag after assisting a customer.

Police viewed a surveillance video that showed there was no bag on the counter at first, but when the customer, later identified as Abbott, begins talking to the employee, the bag appears on the counter as if it fell out of Abbott's shirt pocket or sleeve. Abbott then sees the baggie and places his motorcycle helmet over the baggie and continues talking to the employee, according to the affidavit.

The video then shows Abbott pick up the helmet and leave the store without even looking at the baggie, according to the affidavit.

When the employee saw the baggie, he immediately called management and it was taken to the loss prevention office. Police field-tested the substance, which came back positive for cocaine.

The officer returned to the office and received a call from a manager at Walmart who said Abbott had come back into the store to return a phone cord that he had said he would bring back. The officer told the manager to get his identifying information as he was on his way there. Once the officer arrived, he had already missed Abbott, but the manager had received Abbott's identifying information and a drivers license number.

Police obtained a warrant for Abbott's arrest on Nov. 7. He was booked into the Angelina County Jail on Friday. He was released the next day on bond.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
