'Bowling for Scholars' registration nears end

If you like to bowl, you're soon going to have the chance to bowl for a good cause.

The Junior Achievement of the Greater Tyler Area is hosting their 22nd annual "Bowling for Scholars" bowl-a-thon February 16 - 19 at the Green Acres Bowling Center in Tyler.

The Junior Achievement is an organization that teaches kids of all ages financial literacy classes. They're holding their annual bowl-a-thon to raise money for their class materials.

"Well, everybody else has - all the other nonprofits have golf tournaments. And we decided 22, 23 years ago that we would have a bowl-a-thon," explained Executive Director Jim Guay.

The Junior Achievement hopes their bowlers help them raise $25,000 this year.

"It will go specifically to pay for the Junior Achievement materials that we use in the classrooms. We'll have about 178 Junior Achievement classes this year. We have a kit of materials for each one of those volunteers and they cost $80 to $85 dollars for each one of the kits," Guay said.

Each bowler must raise $50 to bowl in the bowl-a-thon -- that's at least $200 per team.

"It's kind of like a numbers game. The more people we get involved with it, the more money we can raise with it. And we're trying to get 100 teams this year. We've already got about 70 teams that are signed up," Guay said.

And according to Guay, you don't need to be an expert bowler to participate.

"Most of the people who bowl in the Junior Achievement bowl-a-thon, they bowl once a year, maybe twice a year if they practice a little bit before the event, but we don't have a lot of league bowlers or a lot of what I call sure-enough bowlers. We don't discriminate against them, but it's a fun thing for people to do," Guay said.

There are prizes for those who get involved. If you donate at least $10 to someone who bowls, you'll be entered into a drawing to win a flat-screen TV.

And if you're bowling and raise at least $100, you'll be entered into a drawing to win a vacation.

If you'd like to participate, you still have until Tuesday, February 7 to sign up. Just go to www.tyler.ja.org to learn more.
