Tyler Komen office releases statement on Planned Parenthood funding

Released by the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Tyler:

Komen Tyler and Local Funding

"We continue to be so thankful for the support of our local community. It is now time to get back to our mission of saving women's lives," says Jennifer Watkins Executive Director, Tyler Affiliate.

Komen National isn't considering today's statement a reversal. It is a clarification of policies and Komen will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood. Komen's goal in the granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending the criteria will ensure that politics have no place this grant process.

"It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics – anyone's politics," says Komen National leadership.

Komen Tyler is currently in the midst of our 2012 grant review process and has just finished accepting grant application for innovative programs that reduce breast cancer mortality. Applicants must be non-profit organizations and must show proof of 501 (c) 3 status.

Komen Tyler along with those who generously support us with their talent, time and resources—is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in our community. Through events like the Komen Tyler Race for the Cure, we have invested more than $2,000,000 in local breast health and breast cancer awareness projects in Smith County.  Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated by the Komen Tyler Affiliate stay in Smith County.  The remaining income goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program for energizing science to find the cures.

"The Komen Tyler Affiliate does not currently fund Planned Parenthood. We have not received a funding application from Planned Parenthood for screening mammograms and we have not funded the organization. We understand that the recent media attention given to this issue has raised concerns and questions about Komen National and their grant policies as well as the reasons for the changes made. We are extremely grateful for the continued support of our East Texas community and we want to make sure our sponsors, donors and supporters understand this situation," says Jennifer Watkins, Executive Director.

Komen Tyler is currently providing $200,000 to programs in East Texas that provide screening mammograms and diagnostic services for over 3,000 women a year and an additional $46,500 in education programs.  For more information on Komen Tyler and our grant programs, please visit www.komentyler.org
