Tyler goes 'Wild' for heart health

February is American Heart Month, and one East Texas city plans to celebrate your heart Saturday night.

The American Heart Association is hosting the 2012 Tyler Heart Ball tomorrow evening, which is themed "Wild at Heart."

"It's just a really great evening to spread awareness about heart disease and stroke, and to raise funds for research that actually goes back to our community," said Mollianna Redding, co-chair for the 2012 Tyler Heart Ball.

And at its core, being "Wild at Heart" means being passionate about helping those with heart disease in East Texas.

"Just to think, do you have the passion to raise funds? Do you have the passion to tell people, this could be you, this could be your family, let's get passionate, let's be wild at heart," said Jennifer Gaston, co-chair for the 2012 Tyler Heart Ball.

One of those who will be honored Saturday night is 3-year old Haven Grace Davis, who passed away last month. Haven Grace received a heart transplant last year, and Gaston remembers how Haven enjoyed last year's Heart Ball.

"Watching her twirling around in her precious little dress and her smile lighting up the room. And it's just so sad to know that she's not with us, but amazing to know the lives that she touched. That plays into heart health begins pre-birth and it continues throughout your life," Gaston said.

A fact Redding said she's realized as well.

"I think the biggest thing that I've learned is that it affects everyone. You know whether it's you personally or a family member or a friend or a friend of a friend, we're all going to be affected one day," she said.

Saturday's dinner begins at 7 p.m. at the Willowbrook Country Club in Tyler.

Tickets are still available. They are $150 each and are available online at the Tyler Heart Ball's website (www.americanheart.org/tylertxheartball).
