Proud Of East Texas: Downtown Marshall

If you haven't been in downtown Marshall lately, you might not even recognize this historic East Texas city. There's a renaissance going on in Marshall and Jerry Cargill couldn't be more pleased.

There are some really uniuque porperties going in downtown: restaurants, bakeries, grills, retail shops..lots of neat things are happening in downtown Marshall.

The first telegraph in the state of Texas came to Marshall actually on this corner. There's no argument that Marshall has a proud history and in its' earlier days was among Texas's biggest cities.

Marshall was also known as the city that hadn't grown in forty years until now. Cargill says when he was a kid that was one of the most ornate bank buildings in the world..they facaded everything down here.

Jerry Cargill, a Dallas businessman who grew up in Marshall, remembers how the city's downtown buildings looked before sheet metal covered up their original beauty, and he's determined to make them shine as they once did.

Cargill doesn't take credit for kicking off Marshall's revitalization..the city had already begun the courthouse restoration and the landmark Weisman Center. Friends of Cargill, who had also started restoration projects got him interested too and that really started things rolling.

Tax deductible donations to help the Hotel Marshall renovation can be sent to : Marshall Downtown Development Corporation, post office box 729, Marshall, Texas 75671.
