Police still searching for man who robbed and assaulted woman at Tyler hospital
Authorities are still searching for the man who robbed and assaulted a woman at a Tyler hospital.
The woman was attacked as she headed into East Texas Medical Center on South Beckham in Tyler around 10 p.m. on Sunday.
Monday, the surveillance video was released. In it you see the suspect walking through the halls of the ETMC parking garage. Then, you see the victim, sixty-three-year-old Shirley Steelman, follow.
Police say Steelman was headed into the hospital to pick up some children when the man decided to attack her.
"The incident shows that she was exiting the garage after parking her vehicle, she walked by the suspect and was continuing on down the foyer-- the outdoor foyer-- toward the front of the hospital,"says Tyler Police PIO Don Martin.
As she walks toward the hospital, the man begins to follow. He only pauses for a brief moment allowing a car to pass. That driver, unknowingly, was the only thing separating the victim from the attacker. Then, the video stops because things got violent.
"He waited until she was alone, there was nobody behind her. Again, stated that he had a knife and took her purse and then threw her up against the wall causing her to break her arm as she was either thrown on the wall or down on the ground," says Martin.
Police say that purse was recovered this morning, just two blocks from the hospital. But, the suspect is still on the loose and authorities hope East Texans can help them find him.
The suspect is described as a black male about 5 foot 9 inches. He was least seen running east bound. Anyone with information is asked to contact Tyler Police.
