Fast-acting woman saves Smith Co. family from fire

A Smith County woman's fast thinking saved her family from a fire.

It happened at13604 County Road 2216 near Lake Tyler in the Chapel Hill area where an oak tree fell hitting a power line.

Ashley Raney was sleeping and didn't hear the tree fall. She says she woke up to the smell of smoke, and a house with no power. Once outside, she saw the tree on the power line. Four generations of East Texans were in the house at the time, most of them asleep.

"My mom works nights. So, I ran inside and I'm like, oh my God, mom, mom, wake up now. The tree is down, the house is covered in smoke we need to up. And, she's like, I'm up, I'm up. I was like no, get up now. Get out of bed, Come on!" Ashley said.

Ashley's mother woke up her mother, and Ashley grabbed her baby and they were out the door with as many of their dogs as they could find. A neighbor called 911 during all this. The Chapel Hill Fire Department arrived and rescued the one dog left behind.

The fire was contained in a matter of minutes, confined to a closet.  The power line was shut off a short time later. Authorities think the saturated ground mat have caused the tree to fall.
