KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

Kilgore Intermediate School Librarian Kay Smith passed away this weekend after a battle with cancer.

"It still really hasn't soaked in, I just know that there will always be a hole there," said Debbie Ott, a coworker and friend.

A hole that Debbie said Kay Smith used to fill with her vibrant presence.

"She's known for meeting the children at the door welcoming them into the library and she had such a love of books she portrayed that to every child that entered these doors," said Debbie.

Kay was the director of the children's department at Forest Home Baptist Church for more than 30 years. Debbie said it was her passion for children that always kept her going.

Kilgore Intermediate student, Sydney Bates said coming to the library was always a treat because she could always count on Mrs. Smith to brighten her day.

"I just always loved coming to see her because she always smiled when she saw me so it may my day better seeing her smile if I had a bad day," said Sydney bates, 5th grader.

Friend and coworker Janet Rowden said she too could always count on Kay, her friend of more than 20 years.

"Very vibrant one that would always help children she enjoyed life and enjoyed visiting with people," said Janet.

Janet says Kay was a woman of great faith, which is why she knows Kay is in a better place now.

"I guess God needed another librarian in heaven," said Janet.

They said knowing Kay is in heaven gives them peace because they know she's no longer suffering.

Funeral services for Kay Smith will be Tuesday at 3 PM at Forest Home Baptist Church, in Kilgore.
