UPDATE: Suspect in Longview police chase identified

UPDATE: Released by the Longview Police Department:

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - On January 22, 2012 at 1:27 p.m. Officers were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle call in the area of East Hawkins Parkway and Judson Road.  While Officers were responding to the call they learned the vehicle, a 2007 maroon Dodge Dakota SLT, was stolen from a location in Harrison County.  When Officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the Princeton Club Apartments parking lot the driver sped away leading Officers on a short pursuit.  Officers called off the pursuit a short time later because the driver of the stolen vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly, and putting citizen's lives in danger.  Several minutes later the suspect struck multiple vehicles in the intersection of South Spur 663 and East Marshall Avenue.   The suspect then fled the scene on foot and was apprehended in a nearby wooded area.  The suspect was identified as 26 year-old James Eric Smelley of Longview.  Smelley was charged with Evading Arrest in a Vehicle, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, and Accident Involving Damage to Vehicle M/B.  Smelley was transported to the Gregg County Jail without further incident after being medically cleared by Good Shepherd Medical Center. 


 

Longview Police were led on a vehicle chase after a man stole a truck around 1:30pm.

Officials say the suspect, 26-year-old, James Eric Smelley was heading southbound on McCann Road when he ran a red light at the intersection of McCann Road and Highway 80, slamming into two cars and a boat.

Authorities say the suspect then went through the intersection and hit two more cars.

Longview Police say the suspect went another 300 yards down and lead police on a short foot chase before being captured.

The suspect is currently at the hospital, but once he is released officials say he will be arrested.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
