Academic Rodeo competition is 'far out'

Kids from all over packed the East Texas Fairground Friday morning to compete in the Engineering Challenge.

The competition was part of the Academic Rodeo.

The students formed teams to visualize and construct a "Mars Rover" made of Legos.

They then tested out their devices on a replica of Mars' surface. They were judged on both their planning and execution, and one student says it wasn't an easy task.

"It was a disaster," says participant Stefan Gregg, "The hot glue came undone, well we already had hot glue on there but it came undone and it was helping to turn the thing and we were on a thing were you had to turn it that way. So it was a disaster, a complete disaster."

More than 1,200 students are participating in the Academic Rodeo. Awards include ribbons and scholarships.
