Tyler Mayor announces re-election bid



Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass announced she intends on running for re-election as Mayor. Her current term expires in 2012.

The following is a press release sent announcing the mayor's intentions:

Barbara Bass announced today her plan to seek re-election as mayor of Tyler.
Pointing to progress made in implementing goals set by the community in Tyler 21 strategic plan, Mayor Bass cited her desire to keep Tyler's positive momentum going, listing some of the successes and projects of which she is most proud:

• Keeping Tyler financially sound in tough economic times as evidenced by its new AAA bond rating
• Maintaining the lowest property tax rate among cities with at least 15,000 residents
• Keeping city employees working without furloughs despite loss of $4 million in sales tax revenues
• The Industry Growth Initiative that focuses on bringing new jobs to key industries, notably healthcare,
education and oil & gas
• Recognition for meeting the State Comptroller's Gold Standard for transparency in local government.
• Initiating City use of social media to enhance communication with community residents
• Launching Lean Sigma methodology resulting in $1.6 million in City budget savings
• Mayor's Veteran's Roundtable and Lake Tyler Roundtable
• Downtown revitalization, including Liberty Hall renovation, opening Gallery Main Street and
implementation of Half Mile of History program
• Opening of Grande Boulevard and pending completion of Earl Campbell Parkway
• North Broadway and US 69 water and sewer expansion, opening new areas for development
• Mayor's Tree Initiative and the new Mayor's Citizen Academy

"I have been blessed to lead the cooperative efforts of a hard working city council, city staff and city manager. It's through real team work that we've been able to do more with less and keep community services at a high level during a tough economy," said Bass. Adding, "I love the job. And, I love representing this great community as its mayor."

Mayor Bass was first elected in May 2008.

She is a partner with Gollob Morgan Peddy PC, Certified Public Accountants, where she has worked with local business as a CPA for more than 30 years. She holds a BBA in Accounting from Texas A&M - Commerce.

Bass is currently serving as Foundation Treasurer for Pollard United Methodist Church. She has
previously served as Chairman of the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, the Tyler Economic
Development Council, and the Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas. In addition, she served as board chairman for the Hospice of East Texas and as treasurer of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra Association.

She has served on the Texas Society of CPAs, her state professional association board, for over 20 years, including three terms on the Executive Board. Also, Barbara was a Leadership Tyler Class I participant, subsequently chairing their board of directors and serving on their advisory board.

Barbara and her husband Billy are native East Texans and have lived in Tyler since 1977.
