Man carrying toddler runs into interstate traffic

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police in Charlotte say a man and a 2-year-old girl are in critical condition after he intentionally ran into traffic on Interstate 77 Sunday night.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, the man, whose name has not been released, ran into northbound traffic on I-77 at 8:20 p.m. Police said he was holding his 2-year-old daughter and was trying to commit suicide and "bring" the baby with him.

The pair was hit by a vehicle and both suffered critical injuries.

The accident caused a series of crashes and a pile-up which hospitalized at least 5 people. The interstate was shut down for hours near the exit to Woodlawn Rd.

Traffic on I-77 was re-routed to Tyvola Rd. and South Blvd. for several hours while police and the Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

Police said that the man was still in the hospital as of Monday morning and will be charged with child abuse inflicting serious injury, attempted first degree murder, and violation of a domestic violence protective order.
