Special Weightlifters See Amazing Results

  Weightlifting has had some powerful results for a group of special East Texans. Members of the Association for Retarded Citizens in Tyler started weightlifting classes at the beginning of the year. Woodcreek Athletic club donated 5-lb. dumbbells, and a physical trainer has been volunteering his time to teach. Group members named themselves the "Gym Dandies." After just a month of working out, some students are already reporting amazing results. Brenda Oldham says she used to have asthma attacks every day, but ever since she started lifting weights, she has not had an attack in more than six weeks.

"It's great," Oldham said. "I can walk faster. I can keep up with the road crew."

Kay Collins has also seen exciting results: "The sit-ups have flattened my stomach out some because I do them once every day."

Woodcreek recently donated 15-22 lb. bars because some of the students said the dumbbells were getting too light. The "Gym Dandies" have also been learning about their muscle groups, working with an exercise ball, and doing other aerobic exercises.
