Target tractor-trailer has icy plunge after 100-yard slide on surface

MONTICELLO, MN (KARE/CNN) – It was a scary Friday morning for a driver of an 18-wheel truck, after he lost control on an interstate, slid across part of an icy pond and then plunged into the water.

The tractor-trailer managed to slide on the ice of the pond for at least 100 yards before crashing through, Minnesota State Patrol officials told the Minneapolis Business Journal.

The truck then sat in about 7 feet of water in a frozen creek near Monticello, about 40 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

The driver of the Target truck was able to escape his semi and crawl across the ice to safety after his truck left Interstate 94. He was later taken to the hospital and released.

Investigators have begun trying to figure out what caused the truck to first leave the road.

Target sent an email to the Minneapolis Business Journal that said the truck was heading to a distribution center after it has just been to a Target retail store.
