Coroner: Skeletal remains found in field are human

CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) - Caddo Coroner Dr. Todd Thoma confirms that human skeletal remains have been found in a pecan orchard off of East Flournoy Lucas and Highway 1 in Caddo Parish.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the field Monday morning to investigate "suspicious circumstances" in connection with the discovery, after a parent called to report that a group of teenagers had came across the bones recently and hadn't told anyone.

According to the Caddo Sheriff's Office, the bones were initially discovered a couple of weeks ago by two teen-age boys who were mudriding on the property. They texted a photo of the bones to a friend, whose mother learned of the discovery this past weekend. She spoke to the boys on Sunday night, and they agreed to show her where they had made the discovery. They went to the property this morning, after which the woman contacted authorities.

Dr. Thoma confirms the bones are human, and that they are scattered. It appears they've been out there for several years, and it's not immediately clear whether they belong to a man or a woman. The discovery was made on private property, in a field behind a pecan orchard.

A team of anthropologists from the LSU F.A.C.E.S lab has been called in from Baton Rouge to help identify the remains. Deputies plan to secure the scene overnight until the team arrives on Tuesday morning.
