Proud of East Texas: VirLinda Stanton

By Joan Hallmark

VirLinda Stanton admits that her life has already had many twists and turns and this year's best twist has been a coveted appearance at the White House. Tyler native Stanton started singing at her grandmother's church when she was nine. With no money for formal training, she became a great observer, with a determination that "can't" wouldn't be part of her vocabulary.

After numerous stage appearances around the country and a two year stint performing on a Disney cruise ship, Stanton grabbed the roles of "Church Lady Darlene" and "Shug Avery" understudy", after auditioning for "the Color Purple" three times. For three years she prayed that she would be chosen to perform at the White House Christmas specials and this year her dream came true. 2011 has been a magical year for Stanton. Tyler and Smith County have both declared "VirLinda Stanton Days and County Road 310 off of Highway 14 has been re-named "VirLinda Lane East and West".
