Massachusetts lawmakers try again to block same-sex marriages

Boston-AP -- Massachusetts lawmakers will face off again today in an effort to resolve wide divisions over the issue of gay marriage.

Seven hours of historic debate during yesterday's opening session of a constitutional convention failed to reach a compromise.

House Speaker Tom Finneran says, "We are as divided as the nation."

The legislative scrambling follows a state court ruling that gays are entitled to full-fledged marriages under the state constitution.

Moments after last night's adjournment, House and Senate leaders met behind closed doors to craft a third version of a compromise that would define marriage as a union between a man and a woman but hold out the possibility of some sort of civil union.

One gay rights activist says she's concerned gays are going end up being treated like second-class citizens when it comes to relationships and benefits.
