Teenager Charged With Church Beating

It was a shocking crime.  A church volunteer beaten with a pipe. But now there is news the suspect is a teenager and fellow member at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Longview.

18 year old Robert Daniel Murray of Longview turned himself into police Tuesday. Instead of focusing on the crime, members of the church say they continue to be amazed of the strength of the victim.

"Laura White: I've been attacked. Dispatcher: okay what happened? Laura: blood all over me. Sorry I can't speak well. Dispatcher: did someone shoot you or anything? Laura: No. Hit me.

That was Laura White's call to police moments after being beaten in the head with a pipe. Her friends say she is truly a courageous woman. "To me that's just amazing that she could do that. When I saw her because she was beaten up pretty bad," says Max Conlin.

Now 18 year old , fellow church member, Robert Murray stands accused. But police don't believe Laura, or Larre as she's called, was specifically targetted.  "We haven't discovered a motive yet and I don't know that we will but we are working toward that goal," says Detective Monty Gage.

Max Conlin with the church did not want to speak on camera concerning Robert Murray, but did offer this statement, he says "For this man, something just clicked in him. He's a good young man who has been raised well."

Larre is the director of the Family History center where she was attacked. Friends say that was her passion in life.  "When people would come in and they were wanting to know things that were really deep or something, well we wouldn't know how. Just look on the calendar and see when Larre White's going to come in 'cause she can tell you anything you want to know," says Jean Jones.

The church now says it's a time for their congregation to support Larre, Trice Williams who fought off the attack, and the man police say is responsible.

Larre White is still in ICU but family and friends say she is improving every day.

As for Robert Murray, he's charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He has already posted his $100,000 bond and is out of jail.
