Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain has dropped out of the race and now the national media has set their sights on Newt Gingrich.
It is disturbing that more attention was paid to Cain's personal life than his positions on the issues, even though, the 9-9-9 plan had a lot of holes in it. But we ended up knowing more about the nine or so women who claimed Mr. Cain was offensive with them than we did about his tax plan.
With Gingrich labeled as the rising star you can bet that his personal life will now take center stage and you also have to wonder if Mitt Romney really wants front-runner status again. He does, of course, but not until a week before the primaries, and that is probably how it will work out.
It is also time to start considering our local and state candidates. I sincerely hope that the focus of our local races will stay on the candidates' abilities, records and positions on the issues.
We need to hold our elected officials accountable to what they pledge during the campaign – that is where the media and voters need to focus. So start looking now for our local candidates and form your opinion not on who has the most yard signs but who truly has the substance to represent and serve you, the voter.
It will make for stronger elected officials and a Better East Texas.
