Tyler woman, victim of brutal attack dies more than 20 yrs later

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The wife of a former Dallas Methodist minister has died in Tyler.

According to Tyler Memorial Funeral officials, Peggy Railey passed away after falling into an unresponsive state more than 20 years ago. No details on the specific cause of death are available at this time.

Railey was brutally attacked in April 1987 and suffered severe injuries, which resulted in a vegetative state. She had been in a Tyler nursing home for about 20 years.

Although her husband, Dallas First United Methodist Minister Walker Railey was tried for attempted murder, he was acquitted in 1993. The crime gained national attention, but has remained unsolved.

Walker Railey was defrocked and divorced his wife in 1997. The family has asked for privacy at this time.

Dr. John Fielder, senior minister of Railey's church, FUMC Dallas released the following statement on Tuesday:

Peggy Railey was a cherished member of our First United Methodist Church of downtown Dallas faith family.  While many of our members have joined since 1987, many others remember Peggy quite well. Her death accentuates the heartbreak and sorrow our church has felt for the past 24 years surrounding the attack upon her and the long years of debilitation resulting from it.  What has often been lost in the midst of the publicity around this tragedy is that she was a loving mother and spouse, a talented sacred musician, and a Christian woman of strong faith. Today we draw upon that same faith to find comfort in the eternal peace that she now knows.  Our heartfelt prayers are with her two adult children and the entire Nicolai family.
