East Texan wins big on Wheel of Fortune

David Schmidt grew up right here in East Texas then moved to Los Angeles where he is now one step closer to his dream job of becoming the next big game show host

"I informed Pat that I was planning on being the next host of the program and he said he thought it would be great, but he wasn't planning on retiring anytime soon," says Schmidt.

But it didn't seem like he hated being on the other side of the wheel.

"I wanted to get one puzzle right so I wouldn't be the laughing stock of Big Sandy," says Schmidt.

He got the first puzzle right and his luck took off from there.

"One day he's in Big Sandy, Texas the next day he's in L.A...he's a wheel of fortune champion," says Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak.

Champion is right, David walked away with more than thirty-thousand dollars in cash and prizes.

"But at one point I asked Pat, 'Is this like some kind of crude joke? Am I going to wake up in a minute?," asked Schmidt.

But it's not a joke or even a dream. David says he has thousands of dollars he plans on spending on family vacations. And after tonight's program, this East Texan will probably have just as many phone calls.
