E. Texan discovers burn pile on top of gas line

Burning trash nearly turned into an explosive experience for one East Texan.

Ulysses Johnson was burning trash on his property on Johnson Street Wednesday night in Longview, when he heard a hissing sound.

He then noticed he had set up his burn pile over the top of an old natural gas line, which was leaking.

He called fire crews out, who then plugged the gas line.

Johnson says he feels lucky that the worst case scenario didn't happen.

"I left, I said my prayers then I went home, said my prayers again so, it scared me you know, I had a good fire going right there," says Johnson.

"These old lines that have been terminated and the houses torn down, these lines can be hit with brush hogs--they can be hit with cars," explained Assistant Longview Fire Chief Curtis Shaw.

Fire officials say old gas lines are rare but they are unearthed periodically.

In this case there was no immediate danger to the public.
