Chase ends with car in pool, 1 arrested

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A vehicle pursuit near downtown Columbia Tuesday afternoon ended with a car submerged in an apartment complex pool and a man in jail.

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department, around 4:45 p.m. the department's Fugitive Task Force was in the area of Longcreek Dr. when they noticed a vehicle driving erratically.

Deputies tried to pull that vehicle over, but the driver, 34-year-old Lavar Baker, refused to stop and deputies continued to pursue the car.

The chase ended when suspect jumped out of the car and the car crashed through a fence and into the pool at the Copperfield Apartments, located at 200 Saluda Rd.

After a short foot chase, deputies apprehended Baker and found him possession of 4 ounces of marijuana.

Baker was charged with failure to stop for blue lights and possession of a controlled substances.

He was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and has since bonded out.
