Shoppers find Christmas deals in out of the box places

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Most of us have bought Christmas gifts for those people on our lists this year-- but not every gift has to come from a traditional place.

"We are seeing that it increases every year, as the economy worsens, we see more people coming in and they say, I'm looking for a specific Christmas item, or I'm just looking for anything for Christmas," said Edna Stovall of A-1 Pawn Shop in Tyler.

"We have a lot of Christmas shoppers. Right now all of our donated Christmas decorations, trees, are on sale 50% off to help with that little bit extra for Christmas," said Gail Gray with Goodwill of East Texas.

Stovall says some people come into her pawn shop to buy those bigger presents they can get in her store for a much better price.

"A lot of them like guns for the husband for hunting, and pieces of jewelry, we've seen a lot of men come in and buy that probably in years past would have gone to a jewelry store now are coming in and buying at a pawn shop," she said.

But some experts say you've got to be extremely careful when you're looking for those online deals on sites like Craigslist.

"If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And again, if you can't see the person face to face, and if they only want to communicate with you via email, it's another clue that it's probably not legitimate," said Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas.

But deal shopping may just be around to stay, at least for the people willing to shop around.

"We see a lot of new faces, and once they come in, then they become regulars, because they see the values of the things we actually have in the store," Gray said.

"I really think it becomes a norm for a lot of people, and once they begin to shop pawn shops, they think, gee, this is exciting, I can three times or four times as much for the family as I could if I went out with the retailers," Stovall said.
