Aids Awareness Day Marked By Low Turnout

National Black HIV/Aids Awareness Day was marked across the United States Saturday.

Recent numbers from the Centers for Disease Control show African Americans account for half of the 40,000 new cases of HIV and Aids reported in the U.S. each year, and those numbers are on the rise.

In Tyler, Texas College planned to hold an educational seminar Saturday, but low turnout forced the event to be cancelled early. School leaders and local activist say difficulty in getting their message across is one reason for the high infection rate among blacks.

Texas College will host another informational day, Thursday, February 12 at 7 p.m. in the "Glass Building". They encourage everyone to attend.
