UPDATE: Name of man killed on motorized scooter released

UPDATE Tuesday 12:05 PM: The Gladewater Police Department has confirmed the name of the man killed in an accident last week. 59-year-old, Tannis Torres, Jr. was struck by a truck and killed while trying to cross Highway 80 on a motorized scooter on Friday.

UPDATE: "I saw the man riding down the road just on the side of the road and then I looked up and all the traffic was stopped. I heard the crash and I walked down to the end of the store and I saw the man on the ground and his wheelchair in like a thousand pieces. I got all emotional then I couldn't help it," says witness Jessica Bowen.

A Gladewater man left his home at the Texan Nursing and Rehab of Gladewater earlier this afternoon and was trying to cross Highway 80 in his electric wheelchair-something nearby residents say he did all the time.

He was running an errand when the driver of a white Ford F-150 hit him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A man who was visiting family across the street was there moments after the accident.

"We pulled up as they was laying the cones out and we saw a body. It was sad seeing the wheelchair all in pieces," another witness says.

"I've never seen anything like this before...it's horrible," says Bowen.

According to Gladewater residents, he was a friendly and familiar face.

"I actually saw him yesterday. I was siting on my balcony just enjoying the evening. He seemed to be a pretty nice guy," says a witness who lives in an apartment across from the accident.

A tragic accident that gripped the hearts of many.

So far, no citations have been issued, but the accident is still under investigation.
