LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Angelina County Sheriff's Office has charged a Lufkin man in the death of his girlfriend's three-year-old son, in what investigators are calling a horrible child abuse case.

Kerry Jock Woodard, 26, was booked into the Angelina County Jail on a charge of capital murder on Wednesday, where he is being held without bond.

Lt. Pete Cooper said the death occurred "some time back" when Woodard was taking care of the boy. Since that time, investigators had to do a thorough investigation of the case, and waited for the results of an autopsy before obtaining a warrant for Woodard's arrest.

According to Cooper, Investigators Mark McLin and Davy Hill have been working on the case for more than a year.

Woodard was watching the child while the mother while she was working.

Cooper said the child suffered multiple injuries, including a lacerated liver, contusion on the lung, hemorrhages in the eyes and spinal cord, subdural hematomas of the brain and more than 100 documented contusions and abrasions on the head, torso, legs and arms.

The child was originally treated for the injuries at a Lufkin hospital last December, and he later died at a Houston hospital.

"This is one of the worst cases of child abuse I have seen or heard of in my law enforcement career," Cooper said. "Our hearts go out to the families involved in this case."
