With Iraq war over, thousands of troops head home

WASHINGTON D.C. (CNN) - As the war in Iraq is winding down, thousands of our troops will be heading home over the next few weeks. And thousands more have already come back.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama marked the end of the war at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He spoke before a large crowd of men and women in uniform and thanked them for their service.

"So, as your commander in chief, on behalf of a grateful nation, I'm proud to finally say these two words-- and I know your families agree-- welcome home (cheers). Welcome home! Welcome home!"

Nearly all U.S. combat troops in Iraq are scheduled to be home by the end of the year.

As of Monday, military officials said we still had 6,000 troops in Iraq.
