Toddler found walking naked & alone

VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) - A Vanderburgh County mother has been arrested for child neglect. Deputies say her young son was found naked outside in the cold at Westbrook Mobile Home Park.

Authorities say the child was naked and officials say when located the mother, Michelle McCarty, she said she didn't know her son was missing.

The Westbrook Mobile Home Park is just off Saint Joe Avenue, and deputies say the little boy wasn't far from the street. When he was found Monday morning, the temperature was around 40.

Lt. Kirk Byram with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office says, "She appeared to be sleeping when we knocked on the door and woke her up."

McCarty is now in jail arrested for neglect of a dependant.

They say McCarty's son, who's between two and three years old, was found around 10:30 a.m. Monday morning outside, naked and alone.

Toni Ashby who found the toddler says, "Me and my daughter were about to leave and I had her loaded in the car and my boyfriend pulled up and I noticed a little naked blonde boy running down the road so I picked him up and took him to the office."

Ashby lives in the mobile home park and has a three-year-old of her own. She says finding the little boy was a shock.

She says, "I didn't know what to think. I was hoping that I'd see, you know, somebody running around the corner after him, but there was nobody else around, nobody looking for him or anything."

After getting Toni's 911 call, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office and members of the McCutchanville Fire Department started searching for the toddler's family.

They say when they found his mother she seemed extremely incoherent. McCarty later tested positive for narcotics.

The little boy was turned over to CPS. McCarty has a court date for Tuesday morning.
