1 ETX child dead, 1 hospitalized in weekend shootings

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Two Van Zandt County children were accidentally shot over the weekend. One of them did not survive.

The first happened Saturday evening in the Callender Lake community, just south of Ben Wheeler in Van Zandt County.

Then, less than 24 hours later, another child was shot at the intersection of CR 4418 and 4416, between Canton and Van.

Authorities say that the shootings are not related, and in one case, the gun did not even fire a bullet.

Late Saturday afternoon a five-year-old that was at Callendar Lake got hold of a handgun that authorities believe belonged to a family member.

The boy was visiting his grandparent's house and was outside when the incident occurred. The boy was taken to a nearby store where he later died from a gunshot wound.

Investigators aren't saying who pulled the trigger.

Sunday around noon, there was a second shooting reported at CR 4418 and 4416.

The Sherriff's Department says three boys were shooting their pellet guns, and somehow one of the boys was shot in the forehead with a crossman. The ten year old's grandmother called 911, and the boy was flown to a Dallas hospital.

The sheriff adds everyone needs to be educated about gun safety, and pump pellet guns can be just as dangerous as 22 rifles.

At this time no arrests have been made in either shooting. Investigators say the ten-year-old was conscious and responsive Monday morning.
