Local light hanger offers tips to avoid decorating injuries

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Tis the season for decorating -- with lights, trees, and outdoor inflatables.

But if you aren't careful, it's also the season for injuries.

"I've had a lot of customers tell me the reason that they want us to do it instead of them is because they're afraid of falling," said Steve McDonald, owner of Steve's Window Cleaning Service and a professional Christmas light hanger for 8 years.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 5,800 hundred Americans will go to the emergency room because of holiday decorating injuries -- and the majority of those injuries come from falls off of ladders and roofs.

"They get up there and they're afraid of heights and they're on a ladder and they're scared. And that makes it more dangerous for them," McDonald said.

McDonald says the ladders that give him the most trouble are A-frame ladders -- the ladders that are most likely to be in everyone's garage.

"This is one of those $30 ladders you can buy, and when they're new they're pretty steady. But see, I'm never real satisfied with that because this can go that direction, it can go that direction," McDonald said.

Instead, McDonald recommends using a straight ladder because you can set it firmly on the ground.

There are other things concerns too, of course -- mainly about electricity.

"We plugged in this tree there and it tripped the breaker," McDonald said, pointing to a plug on his front porch.

McDonald says to be extremely careful when plugging in those outdoor lights, especially in the rain. Make sure your light cords are out of the way and taped if possible if they're on a sidewalk or porch.

"Because the season is to have fun and to enjoy the pretty lights and not regret having someone do it for you," McDonald said.
